Matthew Hunt has joined the team here at Hunt & Co. as the Growth Manager and we couldn’t be more excited to have him onboard. Before we jump in, you can connect with Matthew via LinkedIn or follow Hunt & Co. on Facebook and Instagram.
What were you doing before you joined us at Hunt & Co.?
Born and raised right here in Queensland, I started my career when I left home and moved to the bush at 16 – the highlight of my time out there was definitely working as a cattle buyer for Australia’s second-largest beef processing company.
11 years and approximately 53,479 business lessons later, I returned to the big smoke.
Since my return, I have been working in my family business, Harcourts Clayfield and Ascot as a Real Estate Agent & Auctioneer.
What are you most excited about now that you are part of the Hunt & Co. team?
There’s something special about the team at Hunt & Co. They truly care about the candidates and clients that they work with.
After one too many dinner table conversations with my wife Holly who started the company – I realised I wanted to be a part of helping people to succeed in their careers and people like you in your businesses.
And tell us a bit about your role and day-to-day at Hunt & Co….
I am the Growth Manager for Hunt & Co. This means I will be responsible for finding awesome new businesses to partner with and find ways that Hunt & Co. can help them fulfill their own growth goals through people. My main focus will be delivering a great client experience & assisting people with diversity within their teams.
Matt, we have obviously done a little introduction before this to say who you are, but in your own words… who is Matt?
Bull at a gate! I don’t do things by halves. A beer-loving, outdoor adventurer who is all about family, friends, good times and helping others succeed.
What is something that not many people know about you?
I lived in Central Queensland for 11 years.
I also lost a fight with a bull which led to a trip to the hospital and a knee recon…. But that’s a story to have over a beer.
What are you currently watching/reading/listening to?
We just got back from being away over the Christmas break and to be honest, it was so great to have a break from the screens.
In saying that, I am eagerly awaiting the next season of Billions.
In terms of professional development, I always aim to learn and sharpen my skills which is why I am currently listening to How I Built This – Guy Raz. I love learning the highs and lows of creating a new business, the lightbulb moments and how people overcome obstacles. You can never stop learning!
What sales/marketing resource would you most recommend?
“You. You are the resource”
I always remember the saying ‘the person who has the ability to connect with people will do more’ which I guess is just another way of saying ‘your net worth is your network’. If you are new to sales I’d focus on that.
What advice do you have to businesses that are looking to grow in 2021?
I think that’s a great question and after the erratic year that was 2020 a lot of businesses are probably just wanting to stabilise and see sustainable business growth.
My advice would be to pull it back to the basics. A good business is a business that has highly effective customer service delivered at a competitive cost. Here’s three key areas to focus on:
- Focus on consistency. Consistency will set you apart from the rest.
- Leverage the value of word of mouth marketing – granted, I already knew that from my rural days but it was great to learn.
- Get out there! When you do more, you have to have the ability to connect with more people.
And when in doubt, give me a call. We’ll take care of the rest.
What tips do you have for other Growth Managers about growing and developing a high performing team?
People are always first. If you get that right from the beginning and provide a workspace that has a strong ethic built around doing the right thing, it resonates with people. When work doesn’t feel like work to your employees, you’ve got that right. Productivity naturally follows.
What technology development is most exciting you at the moment?
AgriTech. The agri world is largely depended on for human survival and an industry that is ripe for innovation.. pretty important right?! It has been great to see the agritech space grow throughout the years and I cannot wait to see that area continue to expand and grow.
Finally, what are some of your favourite things to do around Brisbane when not at work?
I love anything outdoors – 4×4, boating, fishing, beaching and camping.
